S.T.E.M: Students will use boiled eggs to understand the concept of permeable skin! Frogs don’t drink water because the water directly enters their skin. This is how they stay hydrated. This can also have devastating consequences if the water is polluted. This will also help students make connections to the indicator species portion of this week!
Economics: We all know about Groundhog Day, the famous predictor of the coming of spring on the East Coast. A group of people on Pacific West Coast got together and decided that since a groundhog isn’t even native to Washington State, they would start their own tradition! GroundFROG day is a yearly festival in Snohomish, WA where the frog does the weather predicting. This event is a beloved time for the local community but it is also a fundraiser for local charities! After learning about the Groundfrog Day festival, your class can design their own festival! The people of Snohomish decided to find something special to their community to help raise money…what kind of festival will your class create?
Geography: Students will learn what it means for an animal to be an indicator species. These are animals that scientists use to get a check on the wellness of an ecosystem. If something is wrong with these animals, it’s there is a good chance that a bigger problem needs to be considered and fixed.
Civics: Did you know there is a huge problem with the illegal selling of exotic frogs? How do we stop this? Your students will learn about a faucet of environmental law and why they were created. Your students can also have an experience with the process for creating a law by writing laws that the class will vote on!
