Social Studies for February!

 We, LaNesha Tabb and Naomi O’Brien, are SUPER excited that we decided to team up and work on these units together! Our January Unit is complete and ready to purchase now. There’s a FREEBIE to check out, that really shows a sample of what you can expect from these monthly units. We recently completed our February Unit and wanted show you guys what you have to look forward to with this resource.
It is our overall goal with these units to teach young students about different cultures, people, parts of the world, and about our country. For us, this is more about representation than anything else. Teaching “multicultural” lessons or reading “diverse books” isn’t going to be enough to truly give children an antiracist education. Of course it won’t! But, for students (especially primary students) normalizing the study of  BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) is a great place to start. For years, children have been exposed to Washington, Lincoln, Columbus, Bell, Earhart, etc… and that’s it! We have to disrupt that. It is always a good idea to review the bigger ideas in social studies. Especially in February, where you are really getting back into it. We pull out these posters and remind students about each topic.  
Sociology: Who created World Hijab Day? We learn about Nazma Kahn and we use a resource by an AMAZING duo: Asmahan Mashrah and Felicity LeFerve (check their resources out!!) 
Geography: The Geography of the Super Bowl
History: Celebrating Black History
We do SO much with Black history- we have other posts dedicated to them. But, during this time we love to focus on who invented it and WHY this month is even necessary.

Civics: Who Chooses our Holidays? 
We learn all about CONGRESS! It’s so much fun to listen to kindergarteners discussing the roles of the senate and the house of representatives. They always want to know how they can get the job of picking the “rules” that everyone has to follow. That excites me! Run for Congress, little ones!!
(A teacher guide is included to give you plenty of ideas on how to teach these topics to your children. Quizzes are included in the guide as well.)
You guys, we really wanted to make sure we covered all bases with all of the grade levels we hoped to reach. There is truly something for everyone. We included workbooks with longer reading passages, more vocabulary words, and writing prompts for the older grader. There are also eBooks and Mini-Books for the lower grade levels to have access to the same content. Print them out or project them of the entire class to see!
Even if your students are using the 2-3 workbooks (pictured above), the eBooks can still be used as a hook or discussion starter for each new topic!
Some subjects have a craft or interactive activity included. We really want your students to be familiar with the topics they are learning about. We want them to go home excited to tell their families and friends what they learned about in school that day! When we think about the impact those discussions can have, our hearts are so full!
